Is 16GB RAM enough for gaming in 2026? — the honest answer

A handful of titles already exceed 16GB at 1440p high. Most do not. With DDR5 prices spiking, the upgrade math just got ugly.

The honest 2026 answer on 16GB system RAM for gaming is almost. Most current AAA titles still run cleanly in 14-15GB at 1440p high settings. A handful — Star Citizen 4.0, MSFS 2026, Stalker 2 patch 4 — already cross 16GB on launch and force the OS into pagefile thrash.

The 32GB upgrade is the obvious move, but the DDR5 spot price spike makes the math ugly. A 32GB DDR5-6000 kit that was $89 in Q4 2025 is $189 today. That is a meaningful chunk of a budget build that did not exist as a line item six months ago.
