Samsung announced the 990 Pro 3 at the Memcon keynote: PCIe Gen5x4 NVMe, 14GB/s sequential reads, 12.8GB/s sequential writes, 2.6M random IOPS. The bottleneck is officially the PCIe link, not the drive — the V11 NAND is leaving 25% performance on the table just from interface limits.
At $279 for 2TB, the 990 Pro 3 lines up at a $40 premium over the 990 Pro 2. That premium is not worth it for gamers — the real-world game-load deltas at Gen5 are imperceptible. Worth it for content creators dropping multi-TB project files daily.
